The White Horse.
Location: Norfolk, UK | Hospitality | Date: July 2024
Ribble AV was proud to undertake the AV and automation transformation of The White Horse, a beloved bar and restaurant located in the coastal town of Cromer, North Norfolk. With high-profile brands such as KNX, Artcoustic, Control4, and Anthem contributing to this successful project, we turned this local attraction into an exceptional venue for patrons, showcasing our first fully integrated commercial project.
Client Brief and Project Scope
The White Horse underwent a major refurbishment following its acquisition by one of our residential clients. We were approached to provide a complete technology solution, including lighting and HVAC control, audio and video distribution, networking with guest access, and CCTV.
The client’s primary requirement was simplicity—the AV setup needed to be user-friendly for all staff members, regardless of technical experience. Our solution had to integrate seamlessly with the venue’s upscale interior while delivering high-quality audio at volumes appropriate for a residential neighborhood.
Challenges and Solutions
The space presented several technical challenges. For instance, the amount of ceiling glass required on-wall speaker solutions, making Artcoustic's stylish Evolve 1 speakers a natural choice. To complement the sound setup, we installed six Sub Z subwoofers discreetly under bench seating, powered by an Anthem MDX-16 amplifier. This combination allowed us to create a clear and balanced audio experience throughout the bar and restaurant while keeping a visually low profile.
The brief also stipulated that the visual technology had to align with the elegant surroundings of the venue. As such, we specified Samsung Frame TVs that display seaside-themed artwork when not in use, ensuring the screens blended perfectly with the venue’s coastal charm.
A unique aspect of this installation was the audio solution for the bathrooms, where we installed ceiling speakers to play audiobooks—an unusual but well-received feature. Streaming across the venue is managed using Sonos Ports, which integrate seamlessly with the venue’s licensed music streaming subscription.
Automation and Control
With over 50 lighting circuits, five zones of heating, and a dedicated air conditioning zone, we chose KNX as the backbone of the building management and lighting system. LED circuits were managed through DALI for smooth dimming and ease of use.
To simplify staff control, we provided four editable scenes for different times of day or events, all accessible via a back-of-house keypad or bar-mounted Control4 touch panel. We also integrated alarm panel contact closures with KNX, ensuring that lights, music, and other systems automatically activated when the first staff member disarmed the alarm in the morning, and deactivated when the alarm was set at closing.
Overcoming Logistical Challenges
Given the project's distance from our base in Preston, we selected products we knew well and could rely on for remote access. The solution included KNX for building management, Control4 for overall control, Anthem for audio amplification, and HDA for video distribution, along with Ruckus for a robust network infrastructure.
Multiple remote access methods, such as router VPN, KNX VPN (via Gira S1), and Control4 OVRC, ensured we could provide ongoing support and maintenance without needing to be onsite.
Results and Client Success
The end result surpassed our client's expectations. The White Horse is now a fully operational bar and restaurant, running seven days a week without any issues since reopening. The client was so impressed that they have entrusted us with the AV and automation for another bar, Bernie’s in Cromer.
This project stands as a testament to our team's dedication and expertise, especially given the logistical challenges and the scope of work undertaken. It was our first fully commercial venture, and our in-house team of four delivered an outcome we are incredibly proud of, both technically and aesthetically.
Conclusion
The White Horse project showcases our commitment to delivering top-quality AV and automation solutions that are visually discreet, easy to operate, and tailored to our clients' needs. Our ability to blend technology seamlessly with the venue's high-end design has laid the foundation for more commercial projects in the future, and we look forward to expanding our portfolio further.
